The terms 'sustainable' and 'eco-friendly' get thrown around a lot. That's also the case with more sustainable jeans for men and more sustainable jeans for women. Sometimes this creates the impression that a product is better for the environment. Unfortunately, that isn't always true. That's why at Brooklyn we put a strong focus on selecting the right labels and brands. You've probably heard about how much water it takes to make a pair of jeans. Many suppliers are taking a hard look at this process and tackling it in a smarter way. As a result, some products have already managed to drastically cut water use for jeans for men and jeans for women. One example of this kind of innovation is a laser method that needs far less water. Fabrics can also be dyed in a special way, which removes the need for hazardous substances and heavy metals in the production process. Discover the production process behind sustainable jeans or find out which eco labels really matter in our blog post about eco labels.
Nudie Jeans Co.
Nudie Jeans was born from a passion for raw, untreated denim. The brand grew out of an environmental philosophy and has always strived for an ever more sustainable product. And Nudie Jeans succeeded: since 2012, all its jeans have been made from 100% organic cotton. That means 75% less pesticide use, now that's an achievement!
MUD Jeans
MUD Jeans is a Dutch circular company that produces fair and no-waste jeans. At every step, they consider the circularity of their product. It starts with the design: the jeans have to last a long time, but also be fully recyclable & reusable afterwards. The fabric of their jeans is a mix of organic cotton, recycled cotton (from old jeans) & elastane. Production is fair & local. To fight throwaway culture, you can lease their jeans for a monthly fee. Not wearing your jeans anymore? Send them back & MUD will repair them, give them a second life or turn them into fibers for new production. In 2020 they won the Most Sustainable Retailer of the Year award & were finalists in the Circular Awards. Impressive!
Lee
Lee is also strongly committed to sustainable production. The brand launched a line of extremely sustainable denim. Instead of dyeing the denim, they use a kind of foam. They've also joined the Better Cotton Initiative, which aims for a drastic reduction in pesticide use.
Lee Cooper
Less water, less energy, fewer chemicals, more organic and recycled cotton, a strong focus on wellbeing and, of course, quality fashion products: together, that's Lee Cooper's mission. They're committed to the wellbeing of both the planet and people. On top of that, they aim to run entirely on green energy by 2025 and make their jeans 100% recyclable. Now those are great prospects!
Carhartt WIP
Carhartt WIP is also doing its bit for more sustainable production. In their view, it all starts with a durable, timeless product. With that in mind, Carhartt WIP aims to design timeless clothing that, of course, also plays into the trends. A second area where they're trying to make a difference is cotton. Since 2017 they've been integrating organic cotton into their collections. They've also joined the Better Cotton Initiative. Here's to a better world!
Scotch & Soda
Rooted in Amsterdam and its liberal values, Scotch&Soda believes that every individual contributes to society. They're also going for better cotton and have joined the Better Cotton Initiative.
Diesel
Out of a strong sense of responsibility, Diesel set up Diesel For Responsible Living. It sets out which initiatives they'll take to contribute to future generations. In concrete terms, they chose a number of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) as a starting point for concrete actions to help build a better planet.
Levi's
Climate, consumption and community. Those are the three pillars of Levi's sustainability policy. First of all, they look for production methods that are less harmful to the planet: lower energy use, less waste and fewer emissions, and smarter water use. Second, Levi's realizes that consumption habits need to change to reach certain climate goals. That's why Levi's lives by the motto: Buy better, wear longer. With it, they emphasize the lifespan of their jeans. They're also hard at work on circularity. The last pillar, community, is all about people. That's why they started initiatives for the wellbeing of their employees 10 years ago. So Levi's is constantly on the move.
Volcom
Volcom started focusing on sustainability 17 years ago, with production from plastic bottles, less water, organic cotton and many other initiatives.
