Checklist for your new jacket

When the seasons change, your jacket should change with them. Comfortable, technical and stylish jackets. Not technical or stylish: both. They come in all kinds of styles, materials and lengths, so there's plenty to choose from. In this blog, we look at what to keep in mind when choosing the perfect warm layer. As profashionals, we're more than happy to help you find the perfect jacket.

1. Which fit suits your figure?

Comfort and style are both important when choosing the right type of jacket or coat. Can't see the wood for the trees anymore? Follow these tips to get you on your way.

  • Length: the length of your jacket has a big impact on how your outfit looks and works. A long jacket protects you from the rain, while a short jacket gives you more freedom of movement.
  • Sleeves: sleeve length also matters when choosing the right fit. The sleeve should end just below your wrist. Make sure to stretch your arms out in front of you when trying on a jacket: you'll see straight away whether the sleeves are too short. Or would you rather go sleeveless? Then bodywarmers are ideal!
  • Shoulders: make sure the shoulder seams line up with your natural shoulder line. Seams that sit too far in (towards your neck) can feel tight & will tear sooner. If the seams sit too far out, they can make you look broader. That's also how you know the jacket is too big.
  • Fit: when choosing a jacket or coat, think about the functionality you need and how you want to layer. If you like wearing chunky jumpers or sweaters, go for a slightly looser fit. But if you get warm quickly & aren't much of a jumper fan, a fitted style works just fine.

A jacket made for your figure? We got you!

  • Apple shape: if you have an apple-shaped figure with a broader torso and narrower hips, look for jackets that are fitted at the waist. This creates the right balance. Consider wrap styles like a trench coat or belted jackets to highlight your waist and create a flattering silhouette.
  • Pear shape: for a pear-shaped figure with narrower shoulders and wider hips, choose outerwear that accentuates your upper body. Look for jackets with structured shoulders. Oversized blazers are THE trend right now, and they often have shoulder pads too! Details on the shoulders, like embroidery or a fun print, have the same effect. A-line jackets that flare out slightly below the waist can balance your proportions.
  • Hourglass shape: got an hourglass figure, with your waist as the narrowest point? Good news! You can wear lots of different jacket and coat styles. Consider tailored jackets that accentuate your waist, like a peplum jacket. Short jackets look great on you too! These styles highlight your curves and create a beautifully proportioned look.
  • Strawberry shape: for a strawberry-shaped figure with broader shoulders and narrow hips, the goal is to create balance and proportion. Look for jackets that add volume to your lower body. Jackets with pleats can help you achieve this effect. A-line or slightly flared jackets are excellent choices for a more balanced look.

2. Styles of jackets and coats

Jackets and coats are versatile pieces that can lift any outfit. Here are a few ideas for combining different styles:

  • Casual look: for a timeless, comfortable look, pair a classic denim jacket with a white t-shirt and jeans. It's a comfy yet stylish combo that's perfect for casual occasions. You can switch up the look by playing with the shape of your jeans, like a slim fit, straight legs or a trendy wider fit. A denim jacket really goes with everything.
  • Formal wear: got a business or formal occasion coming up? Instantly upgrade your outfit with a well-cut blazer or a sleek trench coat. These stylish pieces add an instant touch of class. For maximum versatility, choose neutral colours like black, navy or beige. Go for a power suit and pick trousers that match your blazer
  • Sporty look: want a sporty look? Choose a lightweight raincoat or a practical puffer jacket. These jackets aren't just functional, they're fashionable too. Pair them with comfortable straight jeans, trendy sneakers and a sweater for a sporty, chic outfit. Play with colours and prints to express your personal style and bring the look to life.

3. Your jacket's functionality

Jackets aren't just a fashion item, they also keep you warm during the cold months. Here are a few key features to guarantee optimal warmth:

  • Insulation: when you're looking for outerwear with excellent insulation, go for high-quality materials like down or synthetic fibres. These insulating materials offer an exceptional warmth-to-weight ratio, so they keep you properly warm without adding unnecessary bulk. Whether you choose a down jacket or one with high-quality synthetic fill, you'll find it protects you perfectly from the cold and keeps you comfortable in any weather.

Layering: besides choosing high-quality insulation, it's just as important to think about the layers you wear under your jacket or coat. A fleece or a wool jumper are the best layers to stay warm. Thanks to their fluffy texture, they insulate brilliantly! Especially if you go for a thinner jacket, these warm layers won't let you down! A bodywarmer does the same, but gives you even more freedom of movement and comfort.
